Pick Of The Week – Shifman Mattresses

-MONDAY’S PICK OF THE WEEK-   This week’s pick is from our Poughkeepsie showroom furniture counselor, Karyn.  She picked our handmade, two-sided Shifman mattresses, the finest handmade mattress in the world.  When shopping for a mattress Karyn suggests you ask some important questions:

Is it a one or two sided mattress?  A one sided mattress is only half a product and will last half as long.  Shifman only makes 2 sided mattresses.

Does it have a real box spring?  A foundation without springs can’t provide support and comfort.  Shifman uses an 8-way, hand-tied and knotted box spring for their handmade mattresses.  Remember, 1/3 of the support of your mattress comes from the box spring.

Is the upholstery material natural or synthetic?  Shifman uses cotton for resiliency, comfort, and durability as well as Belgian damask, matelassé fabrics, wool, cashmere, and pashmina.

Karyn, who suffers from frequent back pain, recently purchased Shifman’s Chagall mattress.  “I’d been sleeping on a memory foam mattress for several years and was not getting the support my back needed.  I would go to bed in pain and wake up the same way.  Now I wake up with no pain and feeling great.  Some mornings I don’t even want to get up!  I absolutely love my Shifman.”

Stop into our Poughkeepsie location and ask Karyn about our two-sided handmade Shifman mattresses.  She promises to get out of bed and be there Monday-Thursday and Saturday from 9:30-5:30.  Or call 845-778-1500 and ask for Karyn.  Sweet dreams!Shifman 2Shifman - Sweet Layers June 16 - FINAL

The Right Sofa Choice (for you)

So, you’ve decided it’s time to part with the old sofa, maybe it’s moving to a family room, or heading with your son to his college apartment.  What to get next?

It can be daunting to go furniture shopping after many years of happily enjoying what you had.  You purchase a car knowing all the available options & what your preferences are, many people spend as much time  on their sofa as in their car each evening, a hasty decision based on appearance (or price) alone will cost you years of comfort, so here’s what you need to know:

005

The true test is being able to sit on the samples of the cushions.  You will know if the piece is right for you only by actually sitting on it. Don’t be shy in the showrooms you visit. “SIT BEFORE YOU COMMIT!” says Furniture Counselor Robin Hults of the Walden Showroom.  Then you can move on to the myriad of fun options such as fabric, welt, trims, skirts & legs!

Millspaugh Furniture offers several different cushion comforts to choose from.  The firmness of the cushion affects appearance as well as comfort, if you want a sofa that looks tailored & holds it’s shape firm is the better choice.  Foam cores and spring cores are the most common options with the next difference being how the core is wrapped, and with what materials. Down filling is heavenly for lounging in a family room, but some people grow weary of plumping & smoothing pillows after each use in a more formal setting.

One final note: Every cushion has a break-in period.  Don’t expect the seat to feel just like the one you replaced or even the one in the showroom for a few weeks.

Checklist for Picking the Perfect Chair

Checklist for Picking the Perfect Chair

When you love to create home interior spaces that delight your eyes and refresh your senses as much as we all do, you know that a chair is so much more than just a place to sit. It’s an expression of your unique style. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a chair, isn’t it? You bet it is! That’s why it’s important to have a good feel for what you’re looking for in a chair before you begin to shop. Here is the checklist we go through with our customers to help them pick the perfect chair for their home.

1. How will you use the chair?
This is perhaps the most important question you can ask yourself, because everything else will stem from your answer. Will this be a chair that stands in a little-used formal room, or your favorite place to sit and watch TV or read? If this is a chair you want to relax in every day, comfort and durability are king. If the chair is more for show, you can go with a style that’s a little less sink-into-comfy and a fabric that is a bit fussier.

2. What is your style?
There are a million styles of chairs out there. Which one is right for you? Formal? Traditional? Causal? Contemporary? Funky? You can add to the chair’s personality through the upholstery fabric you pick, from classic solid to an edgy geometric. Not sure what style lights your fire? Flip through decorating books and magazines, or start a board on Pinterest (look for our Millspaugh boards!), and mark the photos of chairs you love. Your style will surface quickly.

3. How high should the back and arms of the chair be?
Once you know where you will place the chair, this question will be easier to answer. If your chair is going to sit next to an end table, make sure the arms of the chair are either a few inches above or below the tabletop. When I design rooms, I frequently put higher backed chairs, like a wing back, against a wall or flanking the fireplace instead of in the middle of the room so they don’t obstruct the visual flow of the space.

4. What kind of cushions do you like?
First you have to decide whether you want the chair to have a loose back cushion, which looks more inviting to some people, or a tight back, which offers a cleaner silhouette. Then, you have to decide what kind of seat cushion grabs you. Do you like a firmer seat or one that is super soft? The best way to decide is to give the chair the sit test.

5. What kind of arm do you prefer?
Do you want the arm to show some wood or be padded? Thick or thin? If you want an arm style that will never go out of vogue, consider an English rolled arm. You’ll see this centuries old classic spotlighted in decorating magazines decade after decade because it stands the test of time.

6. Do you want a skirt?
Skirts on chairs are still popular, though the height and depth of the skirt changes now and then. If you have pets, you might want to think twice about a skirt. If your cat or dog likes to rest against the chair when it sleeps, the oils in its skin and shedding hair can make the skirt dingy. Dirty shoes can be a problem too.

7. What kind of upholstery do you want?
Do you need fabric that is durable enough for pets and kids? Do you want a solid or a pattern? A dark or light? To help our customers decide, we take them to our fabric room, filled with hundreds of swatches of upholstery fabric. It doesn’t take them long to zero in on the color and pattern that makes them smile.

8. What is your budget?
When it comes to upholstered furniture, you need to invest in high quality pieces. Less expensive chairs, made with inferior materials and slipshod workmanship, don’t stand the test of time. They will look good for a few years, then they will begin to lose their shape, pill up and fall apart. In contrast, when you invest in a well-made chair that uses top quality materials and expert craftsmanship, you’ll get a piece that you will have for generations, one you can recover over and again. My recommendation is to get the highest quality chair you can afford, knowing it’s an investment piece you will have for years to come.

Do I Need a Boxspring?

Do I Need a Boxspring?

It’s a common question asked of our Furniture Counselors by customers seeking to replace just their mattress.

Do yourself a favor, lift up your mattress and feel the support system that is under it. Can you feel the springs or are you just feeling a stiff board with no support in-between the boards. Do you have a true box spring or is your mattress supported just by a foundation?

If there are no springs you only have a foundation, an inferior alternative to a true box spring. Some people believe that the “dip” in their bed is due to their mattress being worn-out. People often overlook the importance of their box spring, this is what is supporting your mattress and YOU! A foundation does not have any real support for your mattress and therefore it does not support your body as you are trying to sleep. Just as there are springs under your mattress to give support you and your mattress, all of our mattress sets come with a true box spring. This way you will have a longer, more comfortable night’s sleep.

We understand that Mattress shopping is a necessity, far less fun than furniture shopping! Educate yourself before hand to avoid confusion in the showroom, consider the springs in the mattress, the difference between latex or foam and cotton or polyester fill and what the fire retardant layer is made of, and if you prefer a two sided mattresses that you can flip as well as rotate? Select the one that will give you the best night’s sleep for the longest amount of time, often the least expensive will not hold up to the tossing & turning one does for (hopefully) 8 hours a night, making it of more costly in the long run!
